Wellness Medical Qigong (WMQ) Diagnosis and Treatment Technique & Protocol

WMQ is a medical Qigong system that uses  the above theory. It consists of a complete set of Diagnosis and Treatment Techniques. In summary, the protocol is as below:

Note that the protocol consists of BEFORE, DURING and AFTER treatment session. It follows the TCM principle that aliments is caused by Qi Blockage/stagnates; Qi Depletion and/or Qi Imbalance. Base on the result of diagnosis, different technique and protocol is used.

To diagnose the patient, try to understand the background of the aliment, communication and observation is very important in this. You must learn the technique on how to enhance the sensitivity of your palms; use the palm to scan the patient to check the status of the affected area. With further training and experience you can even use the Yi to scan the patient. The main cause of most aliments is Qi Blockage, Qi Depletion or Qi Imbalance. It can also be a combination of these causes.

Qi Blockage is the most common root cause. In this case, unblock the blockage is the first step to do, follow by Sweep, Purge the stagnate Qi, Energize the affected area and stable and seal the area.

Qi Depletion can be due to blockage along the meridian or injury. Quick sweep the area to prepare it for energizing. Once energized, stabilize and seal the area.

Qi Imbalance can be caused by any or combination of the above. After the treatment, regulating the overall Qi for the patient is the most important step to perform.

The above may sound technical to you. In fact, it is very logical and easily understood. The key is regular practice, there is no short cut. The training uses experiential method, it is a step by step hands on conducted in the following sequence:

Discover Qi
To begin with, you must belief the existence of Qi. The discovering includes Qi in your body as well as its present in others. You will also experience how far the Protective Qi can reach. The result is an eye opener.

Activate Qi
There are many methods to activate your Qi. They are so simple and easy to learn.

Enhance Qi
Qi enhancement will increase your sensitivity towards Qi. It is the basis of self healing and improves your ability to heal others.

Recharge Qi
The techniques allow you to recharge your Qi in seconds. This is useful if you are tired or when you need additional Qi for what ever the reason.

Gather Qi
In addition to our internal Qi, there are abundant of Qi surrounding us. The technique on Gathering Qi is useful for both enhancing our internal Qi as well as to use it to heal others.

Circulate Qi
We must be the master of Qi and able to lead the flow. Circulate Qi includes both Inner Orbit and Outer Orbit.

Conserve Qi
There is no point to train so hard and not knowing how not to waste our Qi.

Direct Qi
Before learning how to transmit Qi, ability to direct Qi is important. We want to be able to direct Qi at will. Achieve the traditional saying of “When your Will (Yi) is there; your Qi is there”.

Store Qi
It is important to store Qi at the close of your practice. This will both reserve it for your use at any time as well as to prevent the Qi to stay stagnate in the meridian.

Transmit Qi
To heal others, you must be able to transmit Qi to others. You will be surprise with how powerful your Qi is and to experience for yourself, “energy (Qi) is not constrained by distance” as what Quantum Physics claimed.

Self Healing using Qigong

The way to use Qigong for self healing is first to locate and identify the root cause of the problem. It is due to Qi blockage, depletion or imbalance. Next to enhance internal Qi, and then use the strong flow to clear the blockage, energize or balance the affect part of the body.
The Qi can be enhanced and generated by various methods; the easiest and simple method is the use of Qigong Normal Abdominal Breathing method. Once the Dan Tian, Qi is abundant, the Qi will flow to the main channels then to the twelve meridians. You can use movement to lead the flow along the meridians; this is known as Dao Yin method.

In self healing, besides the breathing technique, one may practice other methods like sound vibration and meditation to achieve holistic effect. For beginners, he must first of all understand and experience what is Qi, after that he can learn how to activate and enhance his own internal Qi, follow by how to circulate and direct Qi to the various part of the body. Once he is able to achieve this, he can start learning self healing techniques.

The procedure on self healing can be summarized as below:

Loosening and Activate Qi – the more loosen the body the easier the Qi flows. Therefore, loosening is the initial part of the exercise; follow by activation of the Qi flow.

Circulate and Direct Qi – the Inner Orbit along the main channels and flow of Qi along the twelve meridians is the next part of exercise, if the problem in the affected area is not serious, the flow will help to clear the problem. However, if the flow not able to clear the problem, directing the stronger flow to the affected area is the next thing to do. If need to, the help of a Medical Qigong master to clear the area is recommended.

Flush and Cleanse Qi – there are Flushing and Cleansing techniques to assist in the clearing of the affected area.
Enhance and Energize Qi – enhancement of Qi is required on a regular basis to help maintain the health status. After enhancement of Qi, it could be used to energize the affected area.

Store and Conserve Qi – at the end of the practice, one must store the Qi at the energy center for use whenever is needed. Learn how to conserve Qi to avoid the unnecessary wastage.

Note that to achieve the above; you may have to practice two to three different types of Qigong exercises using different training methods to complement each other. For example, you may practice three sets of exercises as below:
1. First type to mainly loosening the body activates the meridians, enhance the Qi and store
the Qi.
2. Second type to enhance and energize all the organs and the whole body, circulate and
direct Qi use Dao Yin technique.
3. Third type to Gather, Circulate, Flush, Energize and Store Qi.

The Art of Qigong Breathing

There are various methods of Qigong breathing, namely:

  • Normal Breathing, also called Chest Breathing
  • Normal Abdominal Breathing
  • Reverse Abdominal Breathing
  • Embryonic Breathing
  • Skin Breathing
  • Five Gates Breathing
  • Third Eye Breathing

Each method has its specific purpose. In Medical Qigong; Normal Abdominal Breathing is commonly used. In this method of breathing, the abdomen expands when you inhale and withdraws when you exhale.

The Science of Breathing

We breathe to live, and live by breathing. This  is how important breathing is to our survival. Breathing goes on twenty-four hours a day. It can be regulated by our mind; however, since our minds are occupied most of the time, it is done unconsciously by the respiratory control centers located in the two lowest segments of the brain stem. Our minds and will can override the rhythms generated by this control centers.

The autonomic nervous system consists of a vast network of neurons that controls viscera, blood vessels, and glands throughout the body. Interestingly, the research shows that breathing can influence the autonomic nervous system. Slow, soft and deep breathing will reduce blood pressure; achieve calmness and sense of stability. Our ability to control breathing consciously gives us access and influence to our autonomic nervous system.

The best breathing method to produce a beneficent effect on the autonomic nervous system is 2:1 breathing; take twice the time to exhale as to inhale. In medical terms, the heart rate and breathing connection is called respiratory sinus arrhythmia. Doctors know that pursed-lip breathing is helpful for those with obstructive lung disease. The main reason is it’s lengthen exhalations slows the heart rate, decrease the amount of air remaining in the lungs after exhalation and reduces fear and anxiety.

The amount of air the respiratory system can take is divided into four types of lung volume:

  • Tidal Volume; amount of air that moves in and out in one breath. It amounts to 500ml during relaxed breathing.
  • Inspiratory Reserve Volume; additional air you can inhale after a normal tidal inhalation.It amounts to 3,300ml.
  • Expiratory Reserve Volume; additional air you can exhale after a normal tidal exhalation.It amounts to 1,000ml.
  • Residual Volume; amount of air remain in the lung after you have exhaled as much as possible. It amounts to 1,200ml.

The best breathing method is to inhale as much fresh air as you can to take in more oxygen and to exhale as much still air as you can that contain carbon dioxide. To achieve this is the deep abdominal breathing method with 2:1 ration on exhalation and inhalation. This method allow our lung to its full total lung capacity of 3,800ml; the total of tidal volume plus inspiratory reserve volume. It is four times more than the normal tidal volume of 500ml. This method of breathing isone of the Qigong Breathing methods, Normal Abdominal Breathing method that are taught in the traditional Qigong training for health improvement.

The human body has Eight Extraordinary Main Qi (energy) Channels and Twelve Primary Meridians. Among the eight channels, two of them, the Tu (Governing channel or Yang Channel at the back of the body) and the Ru (Conceptual channel or Yin Channel at the front of the body) are closely related to the Central Nervous system and the Autonomic Nervous system. Qi flow in these two channels form a circular movement known as Inner  Orbit or Microcosmic, in Qigong terms. This flow will stimulate the two nervous systems and also all the various glands and organs linked to them.

The Twelve Primary Meridians

The Twelve Primary Meridians are link, either from the hand or the leg to a respective internal organ, along the meridians there are hundreds of acupuncture points.

There are thousands of secondary meridians branch out from each of the Twelve Meridians lead the Qi to the bone marrow, bone, internal organ and skin. Similar to the blood circulate through the blood artery and capillary system.
The Three Dan Tians (Energy Centers)

The body’s energy circulation requires a “battery” for power supply. The Dan Tians are for this purpose. The Lower Dan Tian (Xia Dan Tian) is located one to two inches below the navel, Middle Dan Tian (Zhong Dan Tian) located at the lower sternum and Upper Dan Tian (Shang Dan Tian) is located at the lower central forehead also known as third eye.

The Lower Dan Tian is the residence of Qi energy and is regarded as our body main Energy Center. To enhance the Qi in the Lower Dan Tian, you can use the most common and popular way which is known as Normal Abdominal Breathing method. After each inhalation, you hold your breath for a couple of seconds and slowly exhale; you can feel the exhale air is warm. After about ten minutes of such exercise you can feel the warmth in the Lower Dan Tian like a furnace.

The Middle Dan Tian is located at the diaphragm which is highly conductive in nature. It stores the Qi that is converted from air and food, known as Post-Birth Qi (Hou Tian Qi). The Qi accumulated in Middle Dan Tian can effect our emotion; therefore, Middle Dan Tian is regarded as our body main Emotion Center.

The Upper Dan Tian is related to our brain, spinal cord and central nervous system. Therefore, the stimulation of Upper Dan Tian will stimulate the body hormone production. This will affect the renewal of our body cells, ancient Qigong practitioners regard the Upper Dan Tian as the key for longevity; it is our body Spiritual Center.

Qi Gong on Yin & Yang in the Body

The ancient Chinese conceptualized of Yin and Yang explains and describes how things function in relation to one another. The Yin/Yang theory is based on the idea that all phenomena are the product and influenced by, the interaction between nature’s two polar tendencies. This polarization is reflected in our daily lives, for example, by the union of man and woman; the mechanics of electricity; the merging of day and night. Yin and Yang are complementary opposites and describe the process of change in the relative world.

Below are some examples:

• Mind (Yin) and Physical Body (Yang)
• Acid (Yin) and alkaline (Yang)
• Blood flow to the heart (Yin) and from the heart (Yang)
• Solid organs (Yin) and hollow organs (Yang)
• Cold (Yin) and hot (Yang)

It can be said that everything is composed of Yin and Yang in differing proportions; when the proportions are relatively balanced, harmony prevails. An example of the dynamics of the Yin and Yang of body function is the effect on changing breathing types on the pH levels of the body.

The lungs immediately compensate for a change in pH (relative acidity or alkalinity), by changing breathing patterns. Deeper breaths blow off carbon dioxide. This creates less carbonic acid in the buffer system. By simply breathing more deeply the body becomes more alkaline.

By the same token, shallow breathing allows carbon dioxide to accumulate, causing more acidic. From the Western Medicine perspective, the body consists of 14 major systems. In anatomicaland physiological terms, there are Muscular, digestive, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, immune, reproductive, endocrine systems etc. In general, the body is in homeostasis when its needs are being met and its functions are occurring smoothly. Virtually every organ system plays a role in maintaining the constancy of the healthy internal environment. Communication within the body is essential for homeostasis, and this is accomplished primarily by the nervous and endocrine systems.

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the balance of Yin and Yang is most important. To achieve this balance, proper diet and the Qi flow to various organs must be healthy.

In addition, both the physical  body and the mind and spirit must be healthy and balance. Maintaining a perfect balance between Yin and Yang will result in perfect health. An imbalance of Yin and Yang causes disharmony and illness in the physical body. Energetic dysfunction at the physical level may be reflected by imbalances in the paired meridians of the body. For every organ, there is energetic flow through two sets of meridians. The equal flow of Qi energies through the right and left meridians of the body reflects the basic Yin/Yang concept.

What is Medical Qi Gong and how to improve health

The “Wang Ti Nei Ching” or “Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” is the earliest known text on Medical Qigong. It is believed to have been written during the reign of Emperor Huang Ti between the years 2697 B.C and 2596 B.C.

Medical Qigong is a modality of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine); it is a way of affecting  and directing Qi for medical benefit rather than using needles, herbs or massage. Medical Qigong has gained popularity in the recent years. It has been used to treat all kind of physical and emotional ailments. In China and other 4 countries like USA, Medical Qigong is used as complementary therapy for cancer.

In China, major TCM University and hospital has dedicated department for Medical Qigong. Medical Qigong consists of specific techniques that use the knowledge of the body’s internal and external Qi to purge, energize and balance the internal Qi flow for healing.

Medical Qigong has two main types of practice; namely self-healing and healing others. Generally, all forms and types of Qigong are designed to improve the practitioners’ health. Depending on the school of Qigong, the self healing training methods consist of Breathing, Movement, Meditation (Stillness), Sound (Vibration) and Visualization (Dao Yi, Leading the Qi). Each of these methods has its unique purposes and strength. Most Qigong training system uses one or more of these methods, therefore, it is important for the practitioner to understand their own needs and practice the type of art that addresses their need. A complete training system must use the combination of all the four methods to achieve holistic healing effect.

Medical Qi Gong- The Types and Qi

Types of Qigong Practice
Qigong practices can be classified in two main categories according to the training methods, Nei Dan (Internal Elixir) and Wai Dan (External Elixir).

Internal Elixir (Nei Dan) training method focus on building the energy from inside the body, store in the battery of the body, Lower Dan Tian and use gentle movement to lead and manifest Qi to flow along the meridians out through the internal organs and the whole body.

External Elixir (Wai Dan) training method uses more vigorous movements to build Qi in the arms and legs. When enough Qi is accumulated, it will flow thru the body’s meridian system inwards to nourish the internal organs.

Schools of Qigong Practice

There are many schools of Qigong practices; they can be classifying into four major categories according to the purposes of training:
(1) Medical Qigong – for healing, both self healing and to heal others.
(2) Scholar Qigong – for maintaining health.
(3) Martial Art Qigong – for enhancing power in fighting.
(4) Religious Qigong – for spiritual enlightenment.

In terms of style, there are thousands of different styles. Each has its main objective and purpose; some may serve more than one of the above.

Medical Qigong is primarily oriented toward self-healing as well as healing others. Individuals highly skilled in the Art are known as Medical Qigong Masters. Medical Qigong Masters can consciously channel the flow of healthy Qi energy to a sick individual, even at a distance. They can supply Qi to areas of a sick person’s body that may be low in Qi energy. Conversely, they can also draw or reduced excess Qi away from the body regions that are “oversupplied” or “Stagnant”.

Qi is energy which fills the universe. The Chinese believe there are Heaven (Sky) Qi, Earth Qi and Human Qi. Human Qi refers to the Qi within all living person, animals and plants. This vital energy within our body can be used for health and self-healing. The circulation of Qi is directed by our mind, known as Yi (Mind, Thought or Will).

Qi is energy, a bio-electromagnetic force within oneself and in constantly inter-related to outside forces of Heaven Qi and Earth Qi. Our alignment to these forces is important. Our body always seeks to balance the Qi, when it is out of balance or weak, we will be sick.

External Qi
Since we are part of the Earth’s electromagnetic field, our own Qi is affected by variations in the Earth’s energy field. These variations can be caused by sources like the moon, sun and other outer space phenomena. The most obvious cycle that we are exposed to is that of the day/night cycle. As mentioned, alignment to external force is important. The earth is the most powerful single force affecting us. The sun, moon and atmosphere also affect us. The human body is a complex network of interwoven energy fields. The energetic network, which represents the physical framework, is organized by “subtle” energetic systems which coordinate the life-force within the body. There is a hierarchy of subtle energetic systems that coordinate electro physiologic and hormonal function as well as cellular
structure within the physical body. It is primarily from these subtle levels that health and illness  originate. Qigong helps a person to constantly adjust to the multitude of energetic forces and other factors which are having an impact on their body, in other words, to maintain balance.

What many of us may not realize is that metal buildings, vehicles, power lines, electrical appliances, computers, TVs, and broadcast radio waves all contribute to a kind of invisible electrical smog that interferes with the natural magnetic environment. In term they can affect the body immune system.

Internal Qi
The way we think and handle stress affects the internal Qi hence our ability to control the external Qi. Tension is harmful to the body. We need relaxation. Only when relaxation occurs in the whole body, can Qi flow freely throughout the body’s systems. Western medicine also confirms that a significant percentage of aliments are stress-related. Learning to manage stress through Qigong Meditation puts one in the most conducive position to tune into the Earth’s electromagnetic pulsation.

Through the practice of Qigong, one’s internal energy (Qi circulation) is closely related to the mind. In order to be truly healthy, one must have both a healthy physical body and a calm and healthy mind. True good health is both external and internal. Qigong practice is the bridge that links body and mind into an integrated and functional  system and it is the vehicle through which the mind may gain control over the body.

Medical Qigong- The Wellness Way

Health, wealth and happiness are everybody’s dream; particularly staying young and having long life. People all over the world have developed their own ways and believes on how to keep healthy such as aerobic, yoga, qigong, etc… you name it, there are countless. In India, Yoga is well known, in China, Qigong is well known. When we take a closer look at each and every of these systems, there are similarities. One of the common factors in all  is energy, which is known as Prana in India and Qi in China.

Qigong is a form of special exercises originating from China; it has gained popularity in the West over the last twenty years. These exercises are intended to help enhance and move energy (Qi) throughout the body in specified ways. The practice of Qigong is a system of self-healing exercises and meditation that includes postures, special movement, breathing techniques, specific forms of meditation, and self-massage.

I was very keen in Chinese martial arts when I was young. I remember cycling one hour from my house for practice then another one hour home, three times a week. Later, I was told that to be good in the art, the practice of internal strength and Qigong is essential. However, in the 60’sit is difficult to find masters who teach these arts. I resort to enroll a correspondence Qigong course with a master in Taiwan. After a year, I give up because unlike today’s email, skype, teleconference, communication through the normal post was simply not effective to learn the art.

I was very fortunate to train under Grand Master Anthony Wee in 1982. Even though the training at that time is quite martial art oriented, I was able to experience the healing power. My sinus from childhood mystically disappeared after about three months of 5-day weekly training. My other colleagues that I introduced to the training also got their gastric, backache and other problems fixed after few months of training.

In 1992 was another milestone for me, an elderly Qigong Grand Master in Beijing who healed myfriend’s throat cancer in 2 days kindly agreed to teach me Medical Qigong under the condition that his identity to remain anonymous. Even though the Grand Master keeps telling me that I have enough Qi to treat others, I was skeptical of my own ability. I was an Information Technology profession then, without really understand fully how the treatment works I don’t want to treatothers for fear that if I fail, it will be a laughing stock.

Three years past and I have yet to apply my skill on any ‘patient’. On one occasion when my associate from Australia and I were invited by the world leading IT Company to give a one day seminar in Bangkok, my Aussie associate was overly excited over Thai spicy cuisine that got his stomach upset and suffered all night long. The next morning on seeing his paper white face, I knew something was wrong with him. To avoid having to take over his session, a flash of idea came to me and I make an offer to ‘treat’ him. To both our surprise, he recovered and back to his normal energetic self just within minutes. This experience marked the start of my journey in Medical Qigong.

Over the years, I was very fortunate to have met several Medical Qigong masters who were so kind to share their knowledge and experience with me. Among them are Grand Master Shao Xing Xuan, a professional Qigong doctor whose work was documented by four TV stations, and his teacher and mentor Great Grand Master He Si Hai, who have trained many outstanding Medical Qigong Masters, and was instrumental and helped to set up eight Qigong Hospitals in China. He was assigned by the Government of China to help set up Medical Qigong center in Japan, and he was based there for several years.

I was privilege to have brought Grand Master Shao to visit Malaysia in May this year. Please read the article “Qigong to Heal” in the “Fit for Life” on 27th May 2007.

Over the years there were many people who came to me for treatment and training, some came from overseas. The common questions are “How to use Qigong to heal?” “What is Medical Qigong?” “Can everyone be trained in Qigong and Medical Qigong?” The purpose of this post is to share with you my experience and research in this area. I am very sure there are many more masters who are more qualified and experienced than me; I sincerely hope that they too can share with us their skill instead of keeping them as secret.

I have just returned from HIHT Hospital, India to conduct final WMQ treatment techniques training to a group of 18 medical professionals.  Every things goes on very well, Cancer Research Institute (CRI) will be one of the first two departments introducing WMQ as part of integrated therapy for its patients. Since the first training conducted in last September, many of HIHT staffs and some patients have already experienced WMQ healing. Thanks to Dr. Ganasen’s  hard work and coordination. The Integrated Outpatient Clinic will introduce WMQ as well.
This coming September a team of 20 WMQ practitioners from Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Thailand and different part of Malaysia like Penang, Ipoh, Johore and Kuala Lumpur will be visiting HIHT Hospital. I am sure by then,  the people involve in CRI will have wonderful sharing with us.
HIHT Hospital is founded by Swami Rama and located near Dehradum at northern India. In additional to the 800m bed hospital and CRI, they have a Medical University, Nursing College and RDI (Rural Development Institute).

Hi brother foo,

Me too, have a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patient, lady age 52. She has suffered from RA for the past 15 years, and now retired. She has, now able to stop taking her drugs. She has very severe distorted/deformed joints on both her hands, fingers, legs, knees and toes. Walking was almost impossible for her. Last week, I gave her the first treatment, working on her left hand & left leg, as i hope to at least get her left side mobile. Yesterday was the second treatment on her. Surprisingly she felt less pain on her left hand & leg ,and able to walk with the help of the walker. I had her walk 5 feet & back, her family was so happy to see her able to walk again!

I decide to give her 2 treatments/week as she showed much progress. She is now able to hold a cup with her left fingers! and she can grip my hand too. I had healed several major ailments including strokes, but this is my first RA case. I live in Canada and know RA is not cureable and pain is something they learn to live with it. I am glad to share with you my experience. I hope to get her to our next WMQ Treatment Techniques class where Sifu will be conducting personally.
